  • Winter 2004

For many Prairie CCA's, the winter season is the opportunity to fulfill many of their continuing education requirements.  One of the suggestions by veteran CCA's has been to increase the detail and to make training topics more interesting.  There are opportunities for field CCA's to make a difference.

I recently participated in the planning of 3 agronomic conferences, and am delighted to see an increasing number of field CCA's providing valuable input in assembling the program.  This is a key approach in directing CEU's to meet your needs and those of your colleagues.  Consider the following suggestions:

  • CCA's working at dealerships should take an active role in planning staff training.  For technical agronomy training of our staff, I frequently use our Prairie CCA Performance Objectives as the training objectives.  Currently, up to 5 CEU's may be earned in the Professional Development category, which may include such topics as marketing, computer and public speaking courses.

  • Volunteer to plan educational programs at public conferences, trade shows and field days.  Conference planners are appreciative of the field experience brought to the table.

Advantages of such involvement are:

  • CEU's are more likely to be applied for when CCA's are involved in planning the program.  Unfortunately, some conference planners are still oblivious to the CEU application process and make the CEU application at the last minute, without sufficient time for proper notification of which CEU's are available in the different categories.

  • Involvement in planning training agendas allows inclusion of those "hard-to-get" CEU's in Soil and Water Management.
