  • Winter 2003:  Prairie CCA's and What They Do

Awareness of the CCA program has increased across the Prairies.  Producers and other agronomists who attend training workshops are becoming accustomed to the announcements that "the Continuing Education Units sign up sheet is posted at the back of the room".  Some of these meeting participants sign also, seemingly wanting also to be recognized for upgrading their skills and education.

But do they know what CCA's do?  We do!  Our membership has indicated their employment situation and activities.

  • Most CCA's are employed by or are crop input dealers:  58% as fertilizer or pesticide retailers and 25% as seed retailers.  Some 19% are representatives from manufacturers of seed, fertilizer or pesticides.  Of the remaining, 11% are self-employed and 4% work with government.

  • Primary duties are:  dealing directly with growers (76%), field scouting (58%), product sales support (54%), agronomic training, extension and teaching (28%) and research (12%).

  • Over 80% of Prairie CCA's service growers directly in soil fertility planning (85%), weed management and herbicide selection (87%) and disease management and control (82%).  Only slightly fewer offer service in insect management and control (79%) and crop and variety selection (79%).

With the services offered, thank goodness some 777 Certified Crop Advisors call the Canadian Prairies home.
