  • July 2003:  Prairie CCA Corner

As we head into the summer months, CCA's will be involved in working with growers to manage pests and solving crop problems as they develop.  In past articles, we have expressed gratitude to past supporters and retiring members of the Prairie CCA Board.  Another group of supporters warrants special attentions, the employers of CCA's.

We asked CCA participants in a 2002 survey to comment on the support they had received from employers in achieving and maintaining their status.

  • 84% felt their employer provided adequate support in the attempt to become a CCA (i.e.  training, studying for exam).

  • 69% had employers that provided training materials.

  • 60% had employers that provided "in-class" training support.

  • 86% had employers pay the exam fees.

  • 78% had employers pay annual renewal fees.

  • 75% have been recognized in their achievement of CCA status by their employer through new business cards, increases in responsibilities and salary, media announcements or purchase of promotional items.

  • 86% had employers cover the costs of obtaining CEU's to stay certified.

As the Prairie CCA program matures, it is very apparent that the exam is only the first step.  Maintaining CCA certification also involves participation in a minimum of 40 hours of technical training every 2 years.  Not all CCA's are able to maintain this rigorous requirement.

We recognize employers for their past support of the program, and hope for continued support as your CCA's attend training sessions.  They do this to maintain their certification, and to maintain your competitive advantage in having qualified and recognized providers of cropping expertise.
