Message from Lyle Cowell (Board Chair)
Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Prairie CCA e-newsletter!
We hope this means of distribution of news to CCA's is
effective. If you know of CCA's who may not have access to their
e-newsletter, please pass this information on to them.
CCA's are always looking for good quality training, which has also
been a constant topic of discussion at the Prairie CCA Board
table. It is very encouraging to see three initiatives in this
e-newsletter from each province that provide in-depth training,
accessible to most CCA's, and at affordable costs. Please keep
tabs on these CCA events as more information is provided in the next few
months.
On another note, the launch of the CCA job site on www.prairiecca.ca
has been a great success. We hope this helps connect the CCA
employees and employers across Western Canada. Please encourage
your own employer to utilize this effective service!
I hope harvest comes to your region with warm and sunny weather, and
full bins!
Manitoba Clean Environment Commission
In the recent and well publicized Manitoba Clean Environment
Commission (CEC) hearings that took place across the province, Manitoba
CCA's were well represented in our effort to maintain members as
important and skilled Agricultural professionals in the opinion of the
regulators.
Due to earlier efforts of the Prairie CCA Board, an amendment was
made in December 2005 to the Manitoba Livestock Manure and Mortalities
Management Regulations allowing properly trained CCA's to provide manure
management planning services. Following
up on this success, Walter Entz and Eric Gregory made a joint
presentation to the CEC reinforcing the concept of interchangeability of
synthetic and organic fertilizers, the importance of whole farm nutrient
planning and that CCA's often serve as the only face-to-face link
between producers and regulators.
It was noted in a CEC summary that “Certified Crop Advisors are
important third party service providers and play a valuable role in the
development of third-party manure management plans (MMPs).”
The final report, out last winter, did not indicate any change to
the status of Manitoba CCA's with respect to MMP's.

SSCA's Web-Based Ag Tech Journal
The Western Canadian Farm Progress Show in Regina was the
site of the launch of SSCA's new web-based Ag Tech
Journal. The new journal, called "Prairie Soils and
Crops" was unveiled June 18th.
What makes this new web-based journal unique?
The key feature is that the contributors of the major
articles are well known researchers who will synthesize the
research on a particular topic area. They then have the
opportunity to speculate on what the research means, offering
their opinions on the interpretation of the results and on what
additional research is required.
The goal of the journal is to become a handy resource and
reference document for a broad audience including Western
Canadian farmers, consumers and other stakeholders in the
Agricultural industry.

2nd Alberta CCA
Conference Set for 2009
On February 12, 2008, over 100 people attended 'Resisting
Resistance', the first ever Alberta CCA conference. The conference
focused on updates and strategies to manage pest resistance in field
crops.
This conference would not have been possible without the help of the
organizing committee and the numerous industry sponsors. Because
of the success of this conference, another one featuring different
topics is in the works.
Mark your calendars for February 17-18, 2009 and stay tuned for
announcements coming this fall!
